A lot of people looking into creating their own website don’t like the idea of coughing up a few hundred dollars.
I find this to be absolutely annoying Property — you can’t create an entire online business without spending a few hundred bucks. The “frugal” mentality is fantastic for saving money, but not for building an income.
Still, there is an obvious demand out there for “free” blogs and websites. To fill this “need”, some companies offer to let you “piggy back” on their website for free. Blogspot, WordPress and other services off this.
Why You Should Invest in a Real Website
If you’re just looking to have a fun blog to talk about daily events, there’s nothing wrong with this approach at all. However, if you want to actually make money with your website, this would be the worst decision you could make for several reasons:
Security. If you use a “secondary” host, your entire business model is in their hands. You don’t own your website… they own it. You just own the information. If something happens to their server, you can be up a creek without a paddle. It doesn’t add up.
Income. Using your own website allows you to have almost unlimited income potential. You can make money with ads, selling products — Traffic Tips you name it. With a free host, you’ll be extremely limited in your ability to turn a profit. Almost all free hosts have limitations on advertsing, affiliate programs and don’t allow you to make money in other means.
Branding. Using a free host means you don’t have your own domain name. You’ll be “example.blogspot.com” rather than “example.com.” It looks like you couldn’t afford a few bucks, and aren’t legitimate. For marketing purposes alone, it’s worth it to get a real domain.
Usability. Returning traffic is extremely important. Having your name extra long with “blogspot” or “wordpress” instantly makes your website’s name harder to remember. Over the long run, this can mean hundreds of thousands of visitors that don’t come back.
I’ve seen friend after friend try to replicate my success by getting a free “blog” or website — Earn money online all have failed. Don’t make the same mistakes.
If your goal is to make any sort of revenue, then you should invest in an actual website. “Free” websites aren’t really free — you get what you pay for.
